Synthetic Diamonds - The Affordable Option to Natural Diamonds.

Synthetic diamonds have increased in popularity in recent years as an alternative to natural diamonds. Although they do not increase in value, as a true stone will, they are a much more financially affordable alternative to the authentic gem. To the naked eye, a synthetic diamond is almost indistinguishable from its authentic counterpart. With the use of a jeweler's glass; however, an individual can distinguish a fake from a genuine item. Furthermore, synthetic diamonds tend to be slightly more susceptible to damage than true diamonds.

If the stone in question contains nicks or scratches, it is probably synthetic.

  • Your faux man-made diamonds are generally constructed from one of three different types of materials. The most popular material in the construction of synthetic diamond is cubic zirconia. These types of lab-created diamonds are distinguishable from genuine items by their considerably heavier weight and a noticeable lack of flaws.

  • Cubic zirconia (CZ diamond) are available in a wide range of colors, and they are well known for their durability. The second commonly used type of man-made diamond is constructed from moissanite. Although it does occur naturally, the substance is rather hard to obtain. Therefore, the vast majority of moissanite diamonds are manufactured. Its appearance resembles that of a colorless diamond.

  • The third type of substance commonly used to create faux diamonds is rose quartz. This material can be treated through heat processes in order to more closely resemble a true diamond. Quartz rings most closely resemble pink and yellow colored diamonds. Although its image will never match a transparent natural diamond, it is the most cost-effective and affordable option for an artificial.

  • The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond resulted out of decades-old methods that originated during the 1950s. It is fascinating to note that a thought that is in fact decades old is somewhat still employed in the modern-day method of manufacturing CVD diamonds.

CVD synthetic diamonds originated in the gem diamond market about ten years ago. The method includes the usage of gas that may include methane in a vacuum chamber. After this, the process is carried forward by activating and breaking down the molecules of gas with microwaves. This allows carbon atoms to store on a substrate in the same way snowflakes gather in a snowfall.

In order to ensure that one's synthetic closely resembles an authentic diamond, it is important to have the synthetic diamond set in a high-quality band. Although there are couples who choose to have the synthetic diamond settled in a cheap setting, this can truly impair the look of the stone. This type of faux-diamond can also be placed in a setting where they are accentuated by authentic diamonds or other gemstones. Of course, this type of stone is more affordable than true diamonds; however, if a couple wishes to upgrade to authentic diamonds at a later date, they can always do so. The upgrade could be done on a notable day in their history, like a fifth or tenth wedding anniversary.
